Toyota is the world’s best-selling automaker for the fourth year in a row

We have been waiting for Toyota to release sales data for 2023 since the Volkswagen Group announced it had sold 9.24 million new vehicles over the past year. The numbers have arrived and, as expected, the Japanese tyrant was able to easily beat his German rival. With a record 11,233,039 new vehicles shipped last year, up 7.2% from last year, Toyota became the world’s best-selling automaker for the fourth year in a row.


Taking a closer look at the numbers, the Toyota and Lexus brands delivered 10,307,395 new cars in 2023, or 7.7% more than the previous year, a new record. Toyota’s subsidiary Daihatsu also recorded strong results as sales of new shipments grew 3.2% to 790,441 copies last year. The past 12 months have not been nice with Hino’s automotive division in charge of commercial vehicles, with sales down 9.8% to 135,203 vehicles.

Sales outside Japan hit an all-time high last year when Toyota and its subsidiaries shipped 8,928,230 new vehicles, an increase of 4.1% from a year earlier. The two flagship brands Toyota and Lexus accounted for the bulk of sales, with 8,634,425 new cars, an increase of 4.3% from 2022 to another record. The United States was the largest single market with 2,617,033 new cars, up 7% from a year earlier.


Lexus, Toyota’s luxury car division, posted record sales in 2023 after shipping 824,258 new vehicles – a huge jump of 132% compared to 2022. North America was by far the largest region where new Lexus cars were sold with 355,606 new cars (more than 124%), followed by Asia with 236,587 cars (more than 113%) and the domestic market in Japan with 94,647 cars (more than 229%).


How did other major automakers perform in 2023? The Hyundai, Kia and Genesis trio achieved total sales of 7.32 million new vehicles (an increase of 6.7%) to occupy last place on the podium. GM has not yet published global sales figures for the previous year, but we will remind you that it shipped 5.93 million vehicles in 2022. Stellantis will publish data for the year that ended Feb. 15, and in the meantime, it’s worth it or we remind you that deliveries reached 5.84 million new vehicles in 2022.


Another Japanese automaker today published global sales results for the entire 2023. Nissan moved 3,225,632 new vehicles in the previous 12 months, representing a 4.6% increase.


With these official figures, Toyota continues to retain the title of the world’s best-selling automaker for the fourth year in a row.
